Dinamite
DJ | Producer | Label Manager
Taking a spin on the Spanish translation of ‘dynamite’, Dinamite is a producer and DJ who blends together tones of barrelling and haunting techno to grip her audience, making her an appropriate addition to Tresor’s bill of residents and host for the club’s New Faces event.
Based in Berlin, Dinamite has been crafting her sound for over a decade to create an aesthetic that’s truly her own. She can bounce from psychedelic techno to old school acid with precision while layering together a multitude of soundscapes for a tumbling trip into a sonic abyss; now one of the trademarks of Dinamite as a DJ.
In another world, Dinamite could have comfortably sat with her Tresor residency and not pushed herself to do anything else. But production has been a huge part of her trajectory and makes up the other half of her artistic capabilities. Having released her first EP ‘Doxa’ on Planet Rhythm in 2015, she has since gone on to produce a plethora of releases for Affin, Detroit Underground, Bipolar Disorder, Illegal Alien Records, Newrhythmic and many more.
Like everyone else in the industries of art, events and music, Dinamite’s schedule with Tresor has been halted due to the ongoing pandemic. The club is currently running a campaign ‘Tresor Never Sleeps’ to tide the business over until it can re-open (who knows when this will be…) but the closure has not stopped Dinamite’s motivation to produce. Continuing to tap into electronic music in all its forms, she shares where she has put her energy over the last few months, along with a very early memory of playing in the caged booth for the first time…
Where was this photo taken and why did you choose it?
Tresor Berlin, Nov 2012. I chose this picture taken by my friend Lucila because it was my first gig at Tresor. I remember this night with so much love and happiness. For me it was a dream come true and it was definitely decisive in my career as a DJ. I remember putting in so much energy and enthusiasm...No less than what the public gave me back. I really miss the basement and of course the club techno scene.
How have you been over the last few months?
All these last few months have been weird in general. I guess we've all seen ourselves playing a different role than we were used to. It is still a process of adaptation.
I spend a lot of time in the studio, letting myself flow and trying not to plan too much in a short term, just create, enjoying the moment, although I want to finish an album that I have been working on since a little before this crisis.
Also, I have found myself more open to collaborate with other artists in different projects. I think it is very important that we all artists get united, to create or to fight for our electronic music scene.
I also spend much time listening to music, although this is not new, but I do take it to a very intimate moment that is almost a ritual without any stress or rush.
This is something that I love these days. Not rush at all!
As a host for New Faces, you would have spent time discovering new artists to curate each NF event. Since Tresor shut (hopefully not forever), have you discovered any promising artists who you would have liked to invite over to an NF party, and if so, who?
Yes, I'm always searching, I discover artists while I select music, through friends…Berlin is a city full of potential artists. I normally have my list with new talents I would like to book, and was always difficult to invite everyone I wanted.
Hopefully soon, you will know the names! 😉
You have also played a few live streams since this all began. Do you enjoy playing in front of a live camera and in a quieter atmosphere compared to a club setting?
I actually played one since the pandemic started, invited by the Humanoid Crew at Goat Shed Berlin.
Streamings are okay but, you cannot compare with the energy and feedback of the crowd you get in the club. Is a different thing. As a complement of the clubs is really nice but, when you see it, like in the last months, as the only option, scares a bit.
How do you feel about your future as an artist and also club culture in general?
I'm trying not to look to the future too much but I think a new way for the electronic scene is starting to develop, and we're just living it. If we keep working, creating and fighting, it will not disappear but will be transformed.
As an artist I think we have no choice but to be patient since it will not be easy in the near future but to continue creating is the key.
What has been a constant source of comfort for you throughout this time?
Luckily I have been well surrounded in these difficult times. Also, anything involved with music is the therapy.
