Kirsti
DJ | Producer | Music Consultant
Running a record label, music consultation business and an event series balanced with a healthy DJ schedule, every aspect of Kirsti Weir’s life is entrenched in electronic music.
Curious about the more unconventional side of dance music, Kirsti has an extensive collection of wonky electro, breakbeat, leftfield techno and trippy mutations which don’t fall into any genre. Having spent a significant chunk of her career working with fabric London, Kirsti’s ear has been exposed to a multitude of sounds and artists from every corner of dance music. However her own label, null+void, has acted as a platform to push the sound she’s truly passionate about; electro-heavy, acid-drenched and broken productions.
Kirsti’s music consultation & communications brand Nothing Truer Than is a full-time job which allows her to flex a broad knowledge of electronic music and provide PR for imprints and artists mostly from the realms of electro, IDM, breaks and techno. The business has hugely helped get the fruits of grassroots labels out to a wider audience over the last year.
As a DJ, Kirsti has played almost every club in London with the likes of Radioactive Man, MODESELEKTOR, Billy Nasty and Jane Fitz. She has also played a bunch of festivals from Dimensions to Bangface and featured on numerous industry panels covering topics from gender roles in dance music to the ins-and-outs of developing and growing a label.
For Kirsti, the below image encapsulates the importance of family, music and a love of parties all in one photo which she explains in more detail…
Where was this photo taken and why did you pick it?
This was taken at Pop in Brixton while I was doing a null+void label stall as part of the Container Records Label Market in November last year. People took it in turn to play music so we got a lot of different vibes, from GQOM OH reps, to Tasha and Ray Keith. I picked it because it's me with my sisters, who are my rocks and there's a special spark of energy between us which I miss so much.
The whole 24 hours I was in London was just brilliant, and all the best things about the city. Getting time with all the people going from the label market to a warehouse party to check my friends' band. It reminds me that something as important as the music is the community behind it.
What are you listening to at the moment if you’re working from home or if you’re still working out in the world, do you have a soundtrack to accompany your journey?
Since I moved to Hastings nearly two years ago I've been working from home aside from going into London for meetings, but work has slowed down a lot in line with what we are seeing going on with the music and events industry. This whole period I'd say has really been about re-listening to Two Lone Swordsmen's body of work - before the Covid pandemic really took root here we sadly lost Andrew Weatherall so myself and my partner have been feeling that loss also.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, do you have a go-to track or style of music that significantly lifts your spirits?
This record is from the last stash I bought when I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to buy many for a while and is a pure soul lifter. Playing music has been my number one escape. I've been playing and mixing nearly every day (aside from when I was actually ill with suspected Covid-19), music's become even more important at this time as a focus. If I feel overwhelmed I remove myself from the situation and have a quiet moment. It helps to find a starting point to resolve a task or whatever is causing the feeling, sometimes even my favourite music is too much for my brain to find clarity.
How do you intend on celebrating once we’re out the other side?
Starting by seeing my close friends and family - but when it's safe. It's just so odd as everything is on hold and we are all missing things we took for granted before. It's hard to plan anything, I had three null+void events planned for this first part of the year and none of them have or will happen now and I really feel there's little point trying to plan anything this year in any part of my life, I've just had to let go of that planning part of my personality in many aspects and put energies elsewhere.
Any tips on how to look after your mind and body during this slightly stressful time?
Don't put too much pressure on yourself. There will be highs and lows, days you really can't get started but then days when it will come back and you will find your focus and creativity again. I think we all expect ourselves to be unaffected by emotion and pressure with relentless social media showings of 'living your perfect life'. But we are all human at the end of the day.
