Tia Cousins

DJ

Tia Cousins describes her sound as ‘booky noises, percussion and le doof doof’. The London-based DJ has a hugely extensive knowledge of music across the board which shines throughout her radio show. You can expect anything from experimental jazz and synth-pop to French post-punk and EBM amalgamated into one hour.

Her broad sound has led her to play at a multitude of events across London from a Tate Lates session at the Tate Modern to a Naff party at Corsica Studios with B.Traits, Claire Morgan and DJ Bus Replacement Servicel - her last gig before quarantine properly set in.

The below image was taken at a bar in Peckham, one of many places where Tia will be found once the lockdown lifts…

Where was this photo taken and why did you pick it?

This was taken at mine and my friend Oscar’s birthday party we threw for ourselves back in February at Four Quarters. Together we have a duo project going as Evening Mass, we were probably playing something chuggy.

What are you listening to at the moment if you’re working from home or if you’re still working out in the world, do you have a soundtrack to accompany your journey?

I’ve been tuning into Charlie Bone’s NTS show every morning whilst I’m attempting to finish my uni assignments. I’ve been rinsing this mix by Daniel Lupica which I’ve been loving at the moment! It’s got so many oddities and reminds me of non-isolated summer, which puts me in a good mood.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, do you have a go-to track or style of music that significantly lifts your spirits?

Shocking Blue - Send Me A Postcard

This tune always gets me in a good mood, it’s so upbeat and reminds me of the homies.

How do you intend on celebrating once we’re out the other side?

I’m gonna go straight to the pub for a cold pint of Guinness and probably hit up Helgi’s to go and claim my pint from their crowdfunder they have going at the moment. I also really fancy a scampi and chips, I’ve realised it’s something I’ve taken for granted because it’s not the same when you put it in the oven at home, no crisp.

Any tips on how to look after your mind and body during this slightly stressful time?

I’ve been doing yoga everyday, I think it’s important to give some time to yourself to tune into your body. Also, delete the Apple news app and just stick to the government updates. I got so sick of the breaking news articles, they just scare you. There’s a lot of click bait articles at the moment, so it’s good to not spend too much time on social media.
